Speed
A good quality high speed broadband service is
essential for reliable Hosted Voice
services.
There must be sufficient
upload and download
speeds to allow the voice
packets to flow without interruption.
Clients should check their Broadband Speed on a
PC connected to the service. We recommend they
use
www.speedtest.net
Each VoIP call will use between 30kb to 100kb
(depending upon the Codec used)
so the upload and download speed must be
sufficient to accommodate this.
If
sharing a broadband service between voice and
data the client should be careful
not to make VoIP calls while sending or
receiving large files. The reduction in
broadband
capacity may cause poor voice quality.
The table below shows the recommended maximum
number of simultaneous calls
assuming that the G729a Codec is used.

Line Quality
The quality of the telephone line will also
affect the service. A noisy or low volume
line will cause drop outs and/or poor speech
quality. Clients should test their line using
www.pingtest.net
This will provide a Quality Rating between A to
F showing the lines suitability for VoIP calls.
As a guide, this table shows what is
acceptable and what's
not. This should only be
used as a guide.

Quality
issues can occur on any network and can be to do
with network over
contention or physical lines. For this reason,
we recommend that Service
customers use an Ecotel
DSL connection as we
have more control over getting to the bottom of
the root cause and resolving issues.
Using DSL via another provider will mean the
entire solution is "unsupported".
